Experiences in Middle Level Education

Teachers in the middle level (grades four through eight) complete the bachelor of science degree in education. Students can select certification in core subjects with STR (English language arts and reading, social studies, math, and science: with the science of teaching reading); English language arts and reading/social studies with STR; math; math/science; and science. Students will gain experience with TEA required field-based learning opportunities and clinical teaching (student teaching). Students may learn with peers in living and learning communities, participate in faculty-led study abroad or Study in America trips, develop a professional community at networking events, or join student organizations for a well-rounded experience.

ADVANCE your academic journey
Meet with a First Year Advisor to develop your academic planning. Meet with an advisor before you register for EACH semester throughout your time in college. Middle-level education majors include courses that occur in sequences, and it is very important to take the correct classes each semester to avoid delays in graduation.
Review your degree plan (Core Subjects with STR ; English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies with STR; Math; Math/Science; or Science) EACH semester when you meet with an advisor to make sure that you are on track.

Join the Pre-Teachers Living and Learning Community to experience your first year with peers.
Build social networks by joining student organizations within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
Find additional events and organizations through the Bobcat Organization HUB.

ADVANCE your academic journey
Meet with the College of Education Advising Office EACH semester before registering to ensure sequential enrollment and avoid graduation delays.
Apply for admission to the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) as soon as possible through the Office of Educator Preparation (OEP), a required step for field experience blocks, clinical teaching, and certification.
Learn about the Field Experience (Blocks) and how you fulfill TEA requirements through immersive classroom observation and hands-on teaching experience in a local school. Discuss when you should take your Field Experience Block with your advisor. Apply for block the semester BEFORE you plan to take it (spring for fall, fall for spring).

EXPAND your personal and social development
Consider study abroad options including faculty-led, exchange, virtual, and short-term affiliated programs which are available through Education Abroad or Study in America. Meet with an advisor in these programs to explore financial aid options.
Attend a Nonprofit and Volunteer Fair from Student Involvement to jump into meaningful service in TXST’s community.
Participate in The Big Event to give back to the regional community.
Discover Global Online Learning Experiences for courses with culturally dynamic perspectives.

Pass your Field Experience (Block) to prepare for Clinical Teaching.
Explore careers in education by joining Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE), where you can develop leadership skills and participate in activities like tutoring and community service.
Participate in a leadership activity or hold a leadership role in a student organization through Student Involvement or education-oriented Student Organizations.
Share your content knowledge as a Peer Mentor or Tutor at SLAC.

ADVANCE your academic journey
Confirm your degree audit and progress toward graduation when meeting with your academic advisor EACH semester. Apply for graduation at the beginning of the graduation semester.
Apply for Clinical Teaching the beginning of the semester BEFORE completing Clinical Teaching (spring for fall start, fall for spring start).
Get approved to take your Certification Exams (which must be passed before Clinical Teaching) through the Office of Educator Preparation.

Participate in a leadership activity or hold a leadership role in a student organization through Student Involvement or education-oriented Student Organizations.
Select a Service activity through Student Involvement to give back to the area community.
Attend a Student Government Senate meeting to contribute to your fellow students and your own student experience.

Apply for jobs in districts where you wish to work, either directly with the districts or through Job Fairs offered by Career Services.
Identify and establish faculty and professional references. Good references include field block instructors, course instructors, cooperating teachers, and clinical teaching supervisors.
