A bachelor of arts in French provides opportunities for cultural engagement and the development of transferable skills. Students engage in a variety of translation tasks, including legal and medical documents, literary works such as Les Misérables, and film subtitles. French majors explore topics such as 19th-century Paris through archival research, Marie Antoinette's role in celebrity culture, and cinema and literature of the French-speaking world. Students also participate in service-learning coursework that may include projects supporting communication between French-speaking refugees and local shelters. These experiences connect the acquisition of language proficiency to academic inquiry, intercultural understanding, and community engagement. The French program equips students with knowledge, training, and skills applicable to a wide range of academic, professional, and civic pursuits. Teacher certification in early childhood through twelfth grade is also available.
